Newtongrange grew up around the Lady Victoria Colliery, which is now the National Mining Museum Scotland. It is only a couple of miles south of our Dalkeith office, so when you call we are usually on our way within minutes. The miners’ rows. The terraced cottages built by the Lothian Coal Company are now well over a century old. Most have been modernised, but the plumbing has often been upgraded in stages. It is common to find a newer combi boiler connected to older copper pipework, kitchen and bathroom wastes in rear extensions, and drains that run behind the terrace and are shared with neighbours. Leaks at old compression joints and blocked rear drains are two of our most common calls here.
Post-war and ex-council homes. Many of the semis and terraces from the 1950s–70s still have their original stopcock, which is often seized. If the stopcock will not turn in an emergency, we will talk you through other ways to isolate the water, then replace the valve so it works next time.

If water is escaping, turn your stopcock clockwise to close it. It is usually under the kitchen sink, but sometimes it is in a hall or utility cupboard.
